Blogging…

I will get back to posting photos soon, although I’m thinking of keeping it to once a week - I’ve worked my way through most of my stash, can’t afford to buy more, and don’t have much time to go out so not as many cool looks being created for now… Anyway, blogging. I’m possibly the last one to come in on this, so don’t need to give too much detail, but basically somebody on a popular makeup forum made a loooong post slating makeup bloggers for every crime known to humanity, in particular the fact that we don’t test the products on a variety of skin types and show non-professional use. Hmm. Personally, I blog about makeup because it is fun, because I want some more lighthearted writing practice than I get through my work or my other, often more political blogging. I read beauty blogs because I like looking at the pretty pictures and, yes, to get people’s opinions on the products that are out there. I am not a professional makeup artist. My makeup is applied non-professionally, as I would guess is most people’s day-to-day makeup. Hence, yes, that is what I am going to show. It is also what I want to see in other people’s blogs. Magazines show the products, sometimes artificially enhanced, airbrushed, etc, but certainly applied by a professional artist - I don’t need to know what a product CAN look like in ideal circumstances, I want to know what it DOES look like when someone puts it on for a day at work or an evening in the pub. My other motivation, more seriously, is to come to terms with my own appearance. The fact that my comments aren’t flooded with OMG UGLY GET OFF TEH INTERWEBZ is a good thing for me. My first online makeup photos were posted in a friends-only album on my facebook, and were a reaction to some woman stopping me in the street and ranting about how ugly I was. That sort of thing does happen to me and I hate it, and putting photos up is a way of rebelling against it. Hey, if you agree with her you don’t have to look… One last thing - apparently makeup blogs have ‘bad’ writing style compared to, say, the beauty section of a magazine. I took that as a personal insult to be honest. I am in the process of finishing a PhD thesis, and the ONE thing I have had positive comments on the whole way through is my writing style. Don’t take that away!
