Black tie, red makeup part 1: Lipstick comparisons

These lipsticks were part of my haul in Norwich the other day. For some reason a glossy dark red lipstick (as opposed to lip lacquer) was something I didn’t have. What I did have was No7’s nail varnish in Salsa, which is a lovely glossy dark red and which I instantly thought of when the boy said I needed to smarten up my scruffy self (joke! He would never call me scruffy, as he has no grounds to make that claim and does have some idea of what’s good for him…) for his work’s Christmas dinner. So it made sense to track down a lippy that matched. I have never owned a proper lip liner (although I have improvised with an eye pencil when wearing brown lipstick!) but am willing to be convinced regarding their ability to stop lipstick straying over the edges.
Sadly, Boots did a bit of mild sabotage by not having a bottle of Salsa in stock, so I couldn’t do my usual trick of comparing the colours in the shop itself. (and I also had to go to the Superdrug up the road to get the Barry M one, as that was out of stock in Boots…) This is why I bought two lipsticks, which is usually too big an extravagance. I’m pretty sure I’ll end up using both at some point though! On swatching and comparing them at home, I decided that 141 was the better match with Salsa, although I guess that may change once I have painted my nails if it looks very different on from in the bottle.
As for the liner, I’ve heard great things about Prestige but don’t think this lives up to them. Maybe it’s just that I’m not used to lining my lips with a pencil, but I found this sharp and scratchy and really not the easiest thing to draw a neat line with. In the end I managed to go pretty perfectly around the edges of my mouth, but it just emphasised that my jaw and mouth are a wee bit lopsided, something I tend to prefer not to be reminded of or make obvious to others! Another point in 141’s favour should I decide to still use liner is that the two blended a whole lot better. Frenzy lined with Auburn just looked WAG-ish - ok I am a WAG in a sense as I’m going to this event as someone’s partner, but it may not be the best look anyhow!
